Maybe it is because of lack of overall knowledge and on top of it lack of belief in the realization of wiser ancients - thanks to Time and related inefficient physical senses.
They had realized the one and only Creator (energy) who, according to them, resides within all physical forms that, in reality, are His Own (inferior) images (of the exterior) that reflect relatively poorer reflections with Time' as part of a grand design for His Own purpose. And hence their advice to seek the 'inner self', called 'Absolute Truth', that ever remains unchanged!
